Bryant Beats Holy Cross On Last Minute FG
Saturday, August 31, 2013
The Bryant Bulldogs football team finished the 2012 season winning 4 out of their last 5 and playing their best football. Saturday in Smithfield, Bryant picked up where it left off and scored a nice 17-16 season-opening win over Holy Cross.
Placekicker Tom Alberti was the hero for Bryant as his 30-yard fieldgoal split the uprights with just :38 seconds to play. That culminated a game-winning drive of 10 plays and 71 yards for Bryant.
Believe it or not, Holy Cross still had a chance to win the game as they moved the ball down the field quickly with three pass completions by QB Steve Elder to the Bulldogs 26. But, with :04 seconds left, John Macomber missed a 43-yard game-winning field goal attempt giving Bryant the win.
Senior QB Mike Westerhaus played well for Bryant completing 21 of 40 passes for 323 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was intercepted twice and sacked three times.
Middletown's Ricardo McCray led the Bulldogs with 117 yards rushing on 23 carries while senior WR Jordan Harris had 6 receptions for 127 yards.
Bryant will be back in action next Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Smithfield for a 1pm game against Assumption.
