Providence played host to another music superstar--rapper Talib Kweli was in town this week to perform at Fete Ballroom, the Olneyville Lounge that consistently draws some of the most interesting names in music of all genres. Well known for his collaboration with Mos Def under 'Blackstar' and best known for songs “Definition” and "Get By", Talib Kweli is one of the most influential conscious rappers on the scene today. By all accounts, the roof was raised at Olneyville, and fans filled the ballroom with roars of approval.
Keep your eye out for film stars heading into Rhode Island in the coming months as local producer Chad Verdi gears up for shooting four feature films here in the next 18 months. Verdi has attached writer/director Tom DeNucci to direct his next horror film Army of the Damned. Filming will begin in April with a star-studded cast to be announced soon. This is DeNucci's second film with Verdi--the first was Self-Storage, also filmed in Rhode Island and starring Academy Award Nominee Eric Roberts, Michael Barryman, and Jonathan Silverman. (Self-Storage is set for release this month.)
Verdi's final film of the four will be the long-awaited biopic, PAZ, which will tell the story of Rhode Island's own boxer, Vinnie Pazienza. Verdi has called it his passion project. "It's the inspirational true story of World Champion Boxer Vinny Paz. After a near fatal car crash left Vinny not knowing if he'd ever walk again never mind box, he went on to make one of the most incredible comebacks in sports history," Verdi said. Boiler Room director Ben Younger has been attached to the project.
